The Vent is OUT!

I am so thankful for the NICU nurses. It is some determined nurses that just kept watching that oxygen level and hoping and waiting for the doctor to finally get the vent out of Kaydence.

Yesterday, a wonderful rule-bending nurse finally had enough of us lingering in the nursery and not getting to hold our baby girl. We had been told we couldn't hold her until her arterial IV was removed, but she got an order to override that rule and we were able to hold her.

The only problem was that Kaydence just kept gagging every time we moved her because of the vent. Our nurse said that is common. It made me feel bad for wanting to hold her. I was so disturbed I told Tommy I just wanted to wait until that thing was out of her before we held her again. This morning she was still uncomfortable acting and the nurse told us her tests came back good today and that the vent was set at its lowest possible setting to help her breathe.

This afternoon we went to visit Kaydence and as soon as we walked up to her little bubble, the nurse said, "Is she missing something?!" Sure enough the vent was out! Praise God! Poor Kaydence was ready to snatch out the tube herself apparently, and she had snatched at a lot of things. I held Kaydence for about 45 minutes after that. It was so awsome to finally see her little mouth. She has a CPAP now and does so well. The only time she seemed to get out of whack breathing was when she was dirtying her diaper. Not bad!

I almost cried both today and yesterday as I held her in my arms and sang (very softly) songs she might recognize. Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow was the one that popped into my mind repeatedly. That is one song I sang a lot while she was still in utero. I can't wait for her to sing it one day herself. I am so amazed at how tiny and perfect she is. I am amazed at how alert she is. I am amazed she is here! And so thankful.

How's it Going?

When we arrived here in Baltimore on Sunday, I didn't truly know what to expect, but have had high hopes everything will be great. I mean, we got a room when we didn't think we would and Kaydence had been eerily good all the way here except for the one meltdown. Monday morning, I put my dad in an Uber to the airport with a printed plane ticket because there was no way I was going to trust him working any new app on his phone at such late notice. Even Dad was like, "Nooooo. Don't trust me with an app." It makes me chuckle just thinking about it. We got ready for the day. I was pleased to find that all of Kaydence's breakfast essentials were available in the house already. I just needed to get her some whole milk and make sure we don't run out of Carnation. That was another super blessing. We made our way to the Kennedy Krieger Institute on foot. Yes, we walked. That may be my favorite part of where we are staying. We stayed in an office and met all of our...

Kaydence is turning 3!

I realize it's been forever since I've written here, but life is so busy! I felt the urge to write this, because, let's be honest, there is no way Facebook will let me post a status this long. Kaydence turns 3 in a matter of minutes. She will probably be 3 years old by the time I get through writing this post. Where does the time go? It seems like just yesterday I was pregnant with her and feeling like I wanted to just wake up from a bad dream. Today, she is turning into a sweet little girl. Where do I even start? I guess I'll start with a word of thanksgiving that God has blessed me with such a treasure. I still don't understand why He would choose me to care for a child like Kaydence Grace. I'm really unworthy of any blessings, yet He chose me for her and her for me. She melts me every single day. You see, I'm still the same sinner I was when I started this blog. I'm not perfect, but He washes away my sins anyway. I'm so thankful. The sins chang...

We are finally headed back to Baltimore

The beginning of the school year will be off to a very different start for our family this year. The big kids will begin school on August 14, while Kaydence will not. Instead, she will be gearing up for a month-long trip to Baltimore yet again. We were supposed to go in May, but Tommy's employer changed insurance carriers May 1st. I know it sounds strange, but that is when their insurance year begins, however deductibles follow the calendar year. So we changed from United Healthcare to Blue Cross Blue Shield. The jury is still out on how much I like dealing with either company, but I am thankful and grateful to have health insurance - especially for Kaydence. But since the change was effective May 1st, we wouldn't have pre-authorization for the therapy program through BCBS, and we were originally scheduled to begin the program the last day of April. Kennedy Krieger doesn't offer her particular program in the summer, so we had to wait until August. So here we are. This t...
